Samsung launched the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ flagship smartphones at an event on Sunday, right before Barcelona's Mobile World Congress kicked off this week.
DisplayMate reviewed the phones' display, declaring it's the best display that they have ever tested — and not just in smartphones.
This means that the Galaxy S9 has surpassed even the iPhone X, which was crowned as "best display" last November when it stole the Galaxy Note 8's top spot.
DisplayMate, an authority in display quality, has just released its review of the newly-unveiled Galaxy S9, declaring that its display surpasses the iPhone X's — which in turn had one-upped Samsung's own Galaxy Note 8 when Apple launched it.
"Based on our extensive lab tests and measurements, the Galaxy S9 has an impressive display that establishes many new display performance records," DisplayMate's reports says, earning "[DisplayMate's] 'Best Performing Smartphone Display Award,' and receiving our highest-ever A+ grade."
Samsung did not particularly focus on the Galaxy S9's display at its event in Barcelona, but it nonetheless built upon the already strong foundation of both the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ from the previous generation, as well as the aforementioned Galaxy Note 8.
The Galaxy S9 and S9+ have 5.8- and 6.2-inch displays respectively, both using organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology and QuadHD+ resolution with an elongated 18.5:9 aspect ratio (2960x1440). Altogether, Samsung calls this its "Infinity display."
The choice of OLED — a more advanced and costly technology than, say, LCD — brings with it a number of advantages, such as power efficiency (because pixels can be lit up individually, leaving them off when the colour is black), and colour richness.
DisplayMate particularly focuses on colour accuracy, too, which deems to be "record-setting" and "visually indistinguishable from perfect" when it comes to the Galaxy S9's display.
According to the report: "For all of the calibrated screen modes, the Galaxy S9 has uniformly excellent record-setting, visually indistinguishable from perfect, absolute color accuracy."
Here are DisplayMate's full conclusions of the Galaxy S9:
"Instead of just focusing on pushing the OLED hardware performance levels even higher for the Galaxy S9, Samsung has concentrated on significantly enhancing and optimizing the on-screen 'absolute picture quality' and 'absolute color accuracy' of the OLED display by implementing precision factory display calibration, moving the overall Galaxy S9 display performance to outstanding levels, and setting many new display performance records, including 'absolute color accuracy' that is 'visually indistinguishable from perfect,' and almost certainly considerably better than your existing smartphone, living room 4K Ultra or HDTV, tablet, laptop, and computer monitor based on our detailed lab measurements.
The Galaxy S9 is the most innovative and high-performance smartphone display that we have ever lab tested, breaking and establishing many new display performance records [...]. The Galaxy S9 delivers uniformly consistent all-around top tier display performance and receives all Green ('very good' to 'excellent') ratings in all of the DisplayMate lab test and measurement categories — the first display we have ever tested to get all Green in all categories. The level of display performance and excellence has been increasing each year, and the Galaxy S9 has raised the bar higher."
